There are hundreds of options when it comes to malware protection.
I'm going to tell you why Counter Spy V2 is perhaps one of the best. The software really caught me by surprise. Most folks I know have Adaware and SpyBot Search and Destroy and maybe even another anti-malware software in order to make sure their computer runs clean. Then there is Windows Defender, which is an average software. At any rate, I gave Counter Spy V2 a whirl. It runs very small, taking up less space in your memory than an open web browser page. It has received numerous great reviews and there are other benefits to using it. It does not run intrusively on your computer, but very smartly. You can choose your "paranoid" level and Counter Spy only interacts with you if it is absolutely necessary. Easy to use, extremely effective. I think I'll delete Adaware and all of the others and just run with this one. You can download a 15 day full funtioning trial. The software is $19.99 to purchase. Great value, great software!

Defrag your hard drive with the best program out there.
If you use the basic defrag program that come with Windows you are missing out. It cannot defrag system files, it does not defrag the MFT (Master File Table), nor does it defrag the Paging File on your hard drive. The MFT is a master record of the all of the files on your hard drive called "file records". Each record represents a single file on your disk. By Windows default, this gets completely crammed up because the operating system does not allocate enough space to accommodate the MFT. The Paging File on your hard drive acts as a temporary memory buffer for quicker access to programs. This too gets fragmented and causes system slow down. Not only that, the basic defrag in Windows does not work well at all while you are in Windows. You have to go into "Safe Mode" and turn off your screen saver. I keep my computer fairly clean running. The first time I ran Diskeeper, I saw a 39% increase in performance. You owe it to yourself to give this program a shot. Try a full functioning version of the trial download and you'll see what I mean. Make sure you go into the configuration options and defrag the MFT and Paging File.

One of the most crucial things you can do for your home or office computer is backup important files. 
I recommend having an external or internal hard drive as well as burning data to CD's. This program is just plain fabulous. It will help you to synchronize data in two different locations. You can specify synchronization of a specific folder or folders to another location or you can simply synchronize an entire hard drive to another. What I mean by synchronize is "mirror".

Another great advantage about keeping data synchronized in two different locations is to ensure that all of your data is always available to you. For instance, my working network drive at the office is exactly synchronized to an external drive at home. This allows me to always have my latest work files at my disposal in either location as well as providing a complete backup of important files. You just can't go wrong with SyncBackSE.

Spam? It is a problem isn't it? 
By now we all know how to enlarge our penis or how to live until we are 200 based on miracle drugs. I must receive 80 spam emails a day and the list continues to grow. There have been many who have called on the Government to stop spammers from invading our inbox. This is not a good solution in my estimation. The Government has no business regulating International Cyber Space and if we give 'them' an inch 'they' will take a mile. No, the responsibility falls squarely on our own shoulders.

There are several options available to us. I've tested a few of them with a few goals in mind. First goal was to find a program that was easy to use, unobtrusive and not very expensive. Second goal was to find a spam program that would be effective for the largest segment of those in our audience. Many of the spam programs only offer a version for one type of email program and one type of operating system.

I have found a winner and a program that I am happy to suggest in my tech tips. Personally and thoroughly tested by The PC. This software will immediately and automatically begin to pick spam out of your email and you have full control with a small toolbar that automatically loads into your email program. The software is called "iHateSpam", it allows you many features such as selecting a safe list to ensure your friends always get emails through. Automatic definition updates work by updating suspected Spam mailings. The program can be on "autopilot" or if you are a savvy tech person you can program it to work exactly how you wish.

This program works with the following email programs: Outlook 2000, Outlook XP and Outlook 2003; Outlook Express 5 and above. There is also a server version available for those Admins who would like to place a spam blocker on your network.
